The Queen Elizabeth Scholarships (QES) Advanced Scholars West Africa (QES-AS-WA) program is delighted to invite applications for its second and final call for the upcoming cohort in the academic year 2023-24. This scholarship opportunity is titled “Wurin ta na yin rubutu” translated in Hausa as “Her own room to write“.

This fully funded scholarship for African students aims to empower West African women in the advanced stages of their Ph.D. studies, postdoctoral researchers, and early career academics affiliated with institutions to engage in a transformative research acceleration experience at Carleton University in Canada.

Program Highlights

This initiative is generously supported by the Queen Elizabeth Scholarship – Advanced Scholars West Africa program, with a focus on Sustainable Development Goal 5, emphasizing gender equality. The program integrates this objective across various thematic areas, including climate resilience and sustainable food systems, education and innovation systems, ethics in development research, health equity, inclusive governance, and sustainable inclusive growth.

Administered by Carleton University and financially backed by the International Research Development Centre (IDRC) and Rideau Hall Foundation, the program lasts 35 to 180 days. Participants will spend two-thirds of this time at Carleton University, enhancing research skills under faculty guidance. The remaining one-third will involve fieldwork placements with non-governmental organizations (NGOs) in Canada, West, and Central Africa. The scholarship includes research mentoring, seminars, hands-on learning through research proposals aligned with placements, leadership training, and networking opportunities.
