Eligibility Criteria

To qualify for this esteemed scholarship, applicants must meet specific criteria:

  1. Hold the nationality of a country in the Global South( Africa, Asia including the Middle East, Latin America, and the Caribbean defined by the OECD.)
  2. Do not possess dual nationality from a Global North country.
  3. You should not have previously participated in a degree-seeking higher education program in the Netherlands.
  4. You must be under the age of 35 on September 1, 2024.
  5. Be (conditionally) admitted to the Global Studies study program.
  6. Demonstrate a commitment to becoming an active Global Studies and UM ambassador, sharing experiences in at least one session for students or stakeholders during and after your studies.

How to apply

Step 1: Registration of a Global Studies Programme at Maastricht University

To initiate the application process:

  • Register for a bachelor program using the UM Studielink.
  • Submit your scholarship application with a student ID number from UM.
  • Please note that you can apply for both the bachelor’s program and the scholarship. However, conditional admission to the bachelor program is a prerequisite for scholarship consideration.

Step 2: Fill in the Scholarship Application Form

Complete the Scholarship Application Form using your UM account:

  • Access the application form [here] and log in with your UM account.
  • Upload the required documents in .doc, .docx, or PDF format.
  • Ensure that all documents and referee contact details are accurate and up-to-date, as you can only submit your application once.

Documents for the Maastricht University Global Studies Scholarship

To apply for the Maastricht University Global Studies Scholarship, ensure you have the following documents ready:

  1. Letter of Motivation: Use the provided template focusing on your motivation for the scholarship.
  2. Proof of Academic Excellence: Provide a transcript demonstrating continuous good to excellent results during your prior (high school) education.
  3. Personal Statement of Financial Needs:
  • Explain why you would benefit from the scholarship.
  • Describe personal circumstances, such as financial difficulty, sole parent/caretaking responsibilities, medical condition, disability, refugee status, etc.

4. Curriculum Vitae (CV):

  • Keep it up-to-date, covering relevant education and job experience.
  • Include details about extracurricular engagement with your previous academic organization/high school.
  • Highlight active citizenship in your community.
  • Limit the CV to a maximum of two A4 pages.

5. Reference Letter:

  • Follow the scholarship reference letter guidelines.
  • Ensure the referee is a (former) professor, teacher, principal, college counselor, lecturer, or employer (not a family member).
  • The letter should be dated and written before February 1, 2024.
  • Personally upload the reference letter.

6. Contact Details of One Referee:

  • Inform your referee that the scholarship committee may contact him.
  • Specify the referee’s relationship to you.
  • Include the work telephone number with the applicable country calling code.
  • Provide the work or institutional email address (personal email addresses are not accepted unless a valid reason justification).
  • Ensure that all documents and referee contact details are accurate, as you can only submit your application once. Please note that incomplete applications will not be accepted.
